Tips Alcohol Training and Certification

Leading The Way in Responsible Alcohol Service Training For 27 Years.

TIPS (Training for Intervention ProcedureS) is the global leader in education and training for the responsible service, sale, and consumption of alcohol. Proven effective by third-party studies, TIPS is a skills-based training program that is designed to prevent intoxication, underage drinking, and drunk driving.

In 1982, Dr. Morris Chafetz, - ounding director of the National Institute on Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse and author of Big Fat Liars, developed the first TIPS program. His goal was to create a program that would give bartenders and waiters the skills and confidence they need to prevent their customers from becoming intoxicated. TIPS for On Premise was born. The response was overwhelming, and led to other commercial versions of the program: TIPS for Off Premise, TIPS for Concessions, and TIPS for Gaming.

TIPS (Training for Intervention ProcedureS) is a dynamic, skills-based training program designed to prevent intoxication, drunk driving and underage drinking by enhancing the fundamental "people skills" of servers, sellers and consumers of alcohol. TIPS gives individuals the knowledge and confidence they need to recognize potential alcohol-related problems and intervene to prevent alcohol-related tragedies.

TIPS sessions can be administered through a certified TIPS Trainer or through eTIPS, an online training program. Training conducted by a trainer is implemented through video and printed materials to facilitate discussion of the course content. Course material is presented in three sections: Information, Skills Training and Practice/Rehearsal.

The On Premise (in-house) program s a five-hour program targeted for servers at restaurants, bars, hotels or any establishment where alcohol is consumed on the premises. Restaurants and bars are great places for people to socialize and have a good time. Unfortunately, that good time sometimes gets out of hand. Servers must be able to deal with these problem behaviors and the challenges associated with underage drinking and drunk driving.

TIPS for On Premise empowers your employees to take a proactive approach toward preventing alcohol misuse and maintaining control of the environment. By training your staff to recognize the signs of intoxication, you can reduce the chance that an alcohol-related incident will occur. TIPS-trained servers show your customers that you care about them and want to make their visits to your establishment as pleasant as possible.

Additional Benefits TIPS training can also improve business and community relations. TIPS certification demonstrates a commitment to prevent alcohol-related problems and a desire to be part of the solution in society's fight against drunkenness. Liquor boards and local authorities tend to look favorably on establishments that incorporate TIPS, which can lead to more lenient penalties in the event of an alcohol violation. TIPS for On Premise can also help an establishment protect itself from possible litigation and often results in reduced liability insurance premiums.
